The School

Tuxedo Park School, founded in 1900, is one of the oldest schools in the country specializing in pre-secondary education. The school serves families living in Orange and Rockland Counties in New York and Bergen and Passaic Counties in New Jersey.

Academic Program

The three endowed chairs in English, mathematics, and science, and the three division heads make sure students are actively engaged in the enriched and challenging curriculum. Generally, class size for grades K and 1 is 16, for grades 2 and 3, 17, and for grades 4 through 9, 18.

In grades pre-k through six, teachers send narrative evaluations home two or three times a year. Students earn letter grades starting in 7th grade.

Values

In weekly assemblies, homeroom discussion and special values classes, students learn the meaning and value of courage, honesty, self-discipline, kindness, loyalty, responsibility, and friendship.

Two-thirds of the faculty have earned or are working towards graduate degrees and all participate in the professional development program. All professional staff are evaluated each year. There is no system of tenure.

In 1957 the school moved to the gracious mansion built by John I. Blair in 1915. Major expansion projects in 1967, 1994, and 2004 added modern classrooms, gyms and locker facilities, and studios for art and music.

Fine and Performing Arts

The fine and performing arts infuse our campus with art, music, and drama. The Kathryn Davis Performing Arts Center, specially designed for young performers, provides the appropriate setting for plays, musicals, and concerts.

Extracurricular Activities

TPS offers activities and opportunities that are designed to spark a student's interest. The Student Council takes a very active role in school life by sponsoring social events, dances, sports nights, food and toy drives, weekend trips, and recycling programs.

The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. There is a 20 or 30-minute recess/snack period for most classes mid-morning and three family-style lunch seatings.
