The Tuxedo Park School full day preschool program consists of two classes: “pre-k three and four year olds” and “pre-k four and five year olds.” With two full time teachers in each class, pre-k 3/4 accepts only 10 students and pre-k 4/5 will accept up to 14.  The lead teacher in each of the classrooms holds a Masters Degree. 

The pre-kindergarten curriculum includes language arts, mathematics, social studies, music, art, French, physical education, science, and library media center.  Learning to listen, attend, and show respect are also integral learning skills that we reinforce and model each day to provide children with the foundations for successful education in kindergarten and beyond.

We value the process of learning and we emphasize hands-on learning experiences. We believe that children are active learners who learn best when provided with opportunities to re-create experiences and, when given the opportunity, to use all five senses. The classroom provides children with areas for learning and exploration: blocks, water/sand table, art, writing and drawing, dramatic play, discovery, math, woodworking, and toys & games.

We gather as a group many times throughout the day for discussion, concept introduction, music, literature, exploration, and problem solving. Teachers also work with small groups and individually with the children to adapt lessons to their developmental levels. 

Because the Early Childhood Center is within a larger elementary school, the preschoolers have the advantage of having science, music, physical education, library skills, and French taught to them by master teachers in the school.

Other resources in the school are accessible to these children as well, including school assemblies, the primary school science lab, the school library, gymnasiums and athletic fields, organic garden, healthy lunch prepared fresh daily, and occasional planned interactions with older students. The pre-k students enjoy their own preschool-sized playground, but there is also a larger playground for their use when appropriate.
