Fifth Grade Unit on the Early Civilizations of Egypt, Nubia, and Israel

Fifth grade history just completed a unit on the early civilizations of Egypt, Nubia, and Israel. Students began with a look at the geography of the region and how the Nile affected the lives of people living in Egypt and Nubia in different ways. Students studied the social pyramid of Egypt and its influence on the daily lives of everyone living in its kingdom, as well as the ways in which the Kushites ruled and thrived in the desert south of Egyptian lands. They ended the unit with a look at the early civilizations of Israel and the emergence of Judaism, the oldest known monotheistic religion. Throughout the unit, students took traditional notes, completed writing prompts in addition to traditional assessments, wrote a report, and drew an image of an Egyptian deity. Favorite lessons from this unit include the Egyptian ideas on the afterlife and the Kandake Queens of Nubia!
