Upper School

 

Grades 7-9

In our rigorous preparatory program, students are guided to unearth meaning and approach challenges with confidence.

The objective of our program is for students to learn how to learn, building the skills, grit, and self-motivation to reach their greatest potential.  Throughout their years in the Upper School, students become experienced, inquisitive, and self-directed learners. 

 

Readiness

With guidance from our Director of Secondary School Placement, Upper Schoolers take ownership of their Secondary School search, gain admission to competitive boarding and day schools, and leave TPS well prepared for their future academic challenges.

Unity

Overnight trips to Frost Valley, the Adirondacks, Washington, D.C. and a 9th-grade trip abroad provide academic enrichment as well as an opportunity to build class unity.

Leadership

We provide leadership opportunities for each student, regardless of grade, but as students move into Upper School, more frequent opportunities present themselves and encourage students to step up. Some opportunities to lead include buddy classes, lunch announcements, presenting at assemblies and town halls, or running for athletic team captains or Green or Gold captain.

The values of the Tuxedo Park School community are also dominant in the academic life of the Upper School:

Advisory Program

Students' advisories becomes a tight-knit family, where meaningful discussions and activities help them discover themselves as students, community members, leaders, and friends. 

Athletics

More than just winning or losing, we believe in the power athletic participation has on our students’ abilities to connect their physical, emotional, and intellectual lives.

Special Experiences for 7th-9th Grade

  • Frost Valley: Seventh and eighth grade students and faculty spend three days engaging in team building and environmental science activities.
  • Gore Mountain Ski Trip: Upper School students grade students spend two days skiing at Gore Mountain.
  • Upper School Dance: Dance, dance, dance!
  • Washington DC, 8th Grade: Eighth grade students spend three days exploring D.C. including many museums and tourist attractions.
  • Field Day: The final event of our Green and Gold competition. Students participate in a full day of outdoor games, earning points for their teams. Go Green! Go Gold!
  • Swim Day: Students spend the day at The Tuxedo Club swimming and hanging out with friends. 
  • End of Year Semi-Formal: A formal dinner and dance at The Tuxedo Club.
