Nikki Romanello was born and raised in Texas. As a kid, she spent her free time observing and collecting natural artifacts. During her first year of college, she worked in a natural science lab, gaining experience across several scientific disciplines and laboratory procedures. She earned her BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture and a Concentration in Photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. She volunteered at the annual University of Maryland Iron Pour. She graduated with an MFA in Studio Art, majoring in Sculpture, from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. She worked as a metal department teaching assistant and metal shop technician during her MFA. After graduating, she worked for Will Ryman, Robert Lazzarini, 3rd Ward, and Token NYC. She also participated in a one-year artist residency at the Hot Wood Art Center and presented a solo BioArt show at the University of the Sciences Center in Philadelphia. She was the science director at Slow Factory BioFabrication lab. She currently serves as a BioArt Instructor at Genspace and teaches art workshops at various libraries and schools. She owns and operates a welding shop where she custom-fabricates metal structures and hardware for exhibitions at Poster House NYC.

Discover the world of baking in our beginner's baking class designed for children! Led by our experienced instructors, young bakers will explore the art of baking while fostering creativity and teamwork. Through a carefully crafted series of beginner-friendly activities, children will master the fundamentals of baking. Throughout the course, they will enhance their skills by participating in exciting projects like Cookie Decorating, Fudge Making, crafting Caramel Popcorn, and creating mouthwatering Caramel Apples. Along the way, students will also learn essential baking skills and safety techniques. Join us for a hands-on experience where the joy of baking intertwines with the excitement of learning!

A hands-on introduction to the world of yarn, where little hands do the work before any needles or hooks come into the picture. Students start by getting to know fiber itself. What does real wool feel like? Where does it come from? How can it be stretched, twisted, dyed, and shaped? We work exclusively with natural fibers, wool, cotton, and other plant and animal fibers, so students can feel the different textures. We will finger-knit cozy ropes long enough to wrap around the whole classroom, weave on simple cardboard looms, braid friendship cords, make pom-poms and tassels, and try a bit of wet felting. By the end of the program, students take home pieces they made entirely with their own two hands, and they leave with the fine motor coordination, focus, and patience that prepare them for needle and hook work in the years ahead.

Does your child have a passion for cooking? Are they ready to experience new foods and expand their little palettes? Our students will be engaged as they discover how to prepare delicious international and American dishes safely and skillfully. Our mini chefs will enjoy exploring diverse recipes from Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America, while learning food prep tips and tricks they can use throughout their lives. During our sessions, your child will play kids' games from other countries, learn food terms from around the world, and receive simple recipes they can use at home. This course is tailored for younger students and focuses on microwave cooking. Recipes include Italian Lasagna, Ghanaian Fufu Dumplings, Japanese Rice Balls (Onigiri), Mexican Quesadilla and Salsa, American Mug Cake, Chinese Chaofan, and French Fondue.

Let’s get active after school! In this class for younger students, we’ll review fitness-focused games, activities, and an introduction to team sports. Students will move their bodies and release excess energy to help them be more present at school and at home. They’ll learn skills that will boost their self-esteem for other sports. Along the way, they’ll practice teamwork, communication, and emotional self-regulation skills to help them everywhere, not just on the field or court. It’s sure to be a great time!

Activities include an introduction to Gymnastics, Running, Yoga, Obstacle Courses, Tag, Baseball, Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, Parkour, and more. The variety in sports is contingent upon student interest. Sneakers Required.

Get ready for your kids to have a blast while learning the sport of running! In this fun, low-pressure program, children will learn static and dynamic stretching, proper running form, speed, endurance, and more. Students will be introduced to exciting field events, including hurdles, javelin, shot put, and more. Racefaster website HERE. Our focus is on building strong fundamentals and proper technique while keeping everything engaging and fun. The goal of this program is to improve overall fitness, increase speed and endurance, and help kids become better athletes—all while making new friends and enjoying time with their running buddies!

An introduction to knitting and crochet for students ready to learn a craft they can carry for life. We start from the very beginning, casting on, the knit and purl stitches, the foundation chain, and single crochet, but we work with fingering weight natural fiber yarns from the start: wool, cotton, alpaca, silk, mohair, and linen, the same materials experienced knitters and crocheters use. Over the course of the program, students build toward a real, wearable project: a scarf, a cowl, a beanie, or their first pair of fingerless mitts. Along the way, they learn to read a pattern, fix their own mistakes, choose yarn and needle sizes, and understand how a few simple stitches combine to make almost any garment. This trimester, we will knit the viral Sophie Scarf from Petite Knit. 

Why Natural Fiber, and What's Included:

We use only natural fibers (wool, cotton, alpaca, linen, and silk ) because they teach students how cloth actually behaves: how it warms, breathes, takes dye, blocks into shape, and lasts. Acrylic and synthetic yarns, while cheaper, shed plastic microfibers with every wash and don't reward the techniques students are learning. 

Each class includes a materials fee that covers everything your child needs. They keep their yarn, needles, and hooks at the end of the program so they can continue making at home.

Students step up to knitting needles and crochet hooks, starting with worsted-weight or bulky wool that's forgiving for beginners. We build the foundational stitches:  knit and purl, chain and single crochet. We use them to make real, finished projects: headbands, simple hats on looms, granny squares, small stuffed creatures. All of our yarn is natural fiber, wool, cotton, alpaca, and linen, so students learn to work with materials that breathe, block, and wear the way traditional handwork is meant to. Alongside the technical skills, students learn to read a basic pattern, fix their own mistakes, and see a project through from a tangled start to a finished object they're proud of.

Students continue building "R2-D3", a 3-foot R2-D2-style robot. Last trimester, they built the body, head-swivel, and live camera tracking. This trimester, R2-D3 gets a voice, learns to recognize each student by name, and gains articulated arms with lifelike mannerisms. With time permitting, we will start to build the AI codebase.

Students write real Python against real hardware (Raspberry Pi 5, servos, mic, camera) with no soldering required. No kit, just grit. All AI runs locally on a lab iMac.

This is an advanced robotics class, and students are expected to come ready to learn, participate, and treat classmates and the instructor with respect. Because we work with real electronics and circuits, students also need the emotional maturity to handle that responsibility safely. Please consider whether your child is ready for both before enrolling.

FLL returns to TPS after a very successful 25-26 season! FIRST® LEGO® League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today's students and teachers build a better future together. Friendly competition is at the heart of Challenge, as teams of students ages 9-14 engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering - building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game.

Teams and dates will be determined based on interest. Please contact Mrs. Chambers if you would like to enroll your child in FLL robotics.
